Question:

Wood for a deck?

by  |  earlier

I'm looking for some advice on what type of wood to use for my deck.

I'm planning on using pressure treated wood for the frame, but would like something nicer for the rest of it. I've been told cedar is nice, but was wondering what other wood is a good choice and is not terribly expensive.

Thanks,

  1. go with pressure treated wood all the way. Be sure to get the same kind.

  2. Spend the money on Composite! We've replaced our deck twice in the last 13 years. This year we spent about  $3000 for the composite and we will NEVER need to replace it in again! YEAH!

  3. Not too many choices in the not too expensive range.

Pressure treated is about the cheapest that will give any kind of good use.

Cedar is good but  approx 1-12 times the cost of PT.

Nicer looking & still requires some care.

Composite is  almost twice the cost of cedar, not as classy ,but no maint.

Priced all for a deck approx 16'x18" .....Just deckboards

Material cost alone was approx $1,200 for PT to over $3,500

for composite & did not include matl. for railings.

    Best regards

  4. Go with the cedar. It looks nicer  with natural stain on it and will last a long time. If you are going to put a solid color stain on it, use the pressure treated.

  5. You don't have much choice if cost is a concern.  Other than treated pine and cedar you aren't going to find much that can be used in an exterior project that's not going to cost you an arm and a leg.  The cedar will last a very long time as long as you take care of it.  The treated will also last a very long time, but requires a little more maintenance.  If you use the treated take some advice, if you have a wet or damp environment under the decking then treat the underside of the decking with a sealant when you build the deck.  I've seen a few that started rotting from underneath.

  6. Go with sunshines' advice . Composite is more $$ but lasts forever with little or no upkeep.
