Wood s***w noisy / squealing?

Ok.....i'm s******g 2 1/2" wood screws into pine wood with a cordless drill. When the screws are going in or out / fast or slow / predrilled or not / wet or dry / the screws squeal.

Yes... a squealing noise as the threads of the wood screws rub against the wood while in contact. It's a piercing noise.....sounds like i'm killing someone. lol.

I'm working in the garage downstairs and the wife can't take it anymore.

Any woodworking tips on how to stop a wood s***w squealing while it is being drilled into the wood??

Thanks

  1.     These are the do not's first

Do not use liquid soap, bar soap, oil of any kind, candle wax, spit, water.

do: Go to a lumber ward and get a small plug of carpenters wax, it's bees wax, or get a roll of plumbers toilet wax, it's soft and sticky and cheaper.

  2. any kind of liquid soap.  squirt just a little bit on each s***w, using to much will create a film if it were to squirt out and not allow any coating to adhere on your project, that is if you were making good that need to be finished.  have fun and stop irking your wife or you will be screwed with no lube.  good luck.

  3. Coat them with wax.  I use a small candle.

  4. beeswax...

  5. Soap will attract moisture and rust the screws.  Avoid it.

You can use paraffin wax either as canning wax or from an old candle.  I've also used bees wax and a special s***w lube.

If you don't want to spend the money for this http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page=... use a cheap tube of Chap-Stick.

  6. The real answer here may be to predrill the holes.

  7. DO NOT dip the screws in oil. -it will eventually degrade the wood.

Old Carpenters trick, (learned from old carpenter grandpa).

Take a moist bar of soap.

Just stroke the soap with the threads of the s***w before installing it.

s***w is lubricated, goes in easier, no noise, no damage to the wood.

  8. Try rubbing the screws over a bar of soap.

  9. Use wax or soap, even liquid dish soap will work.

  10. Two options... Dip each s***w in oil before you s***w it or get the wife earplugs.

    Good Luck!

  11. roll them on a bar of soap a couple times.

  12. All are good suggestions. Many guys in construction will put the screws in thier mouth or rub them in thier hair. I use wax or predrill holes.
