  1.   Check with your local codes before any changes, because some can affect your insurance coverage.

In any case ,make sure to use a "zero clearance" wall thimble designed for wood, coal or oil heat.

My unit uses a triple wall, stainless steel pipe, and was factory designed that way and is insurance approved.

  2. If I were working on the wall pass through you have described, the first thing I would do is determine the brand of "Class A" double wall chimney that you already have through the wall.  Purchasing parts to properly finish the system could be less expensive if you can use what you already own.  Once you know the brand of chimney, measure all existing sections of that pipe and make a list.  Each section should be thoroughly cleaned and inspected to make sure the inside pipe is free of dents or other damage. Damaged sections create hot spots that can cause house fires in the event of a chimney fire and should be discarded.   If you can not figure out what brand you own, take a section with you to a good woodstove store.  Experienced installers can tell you what you have and help you select the parts required for a safe installation.  For a complete and safe installation, you must obtain installation directions for your brand of chimney and type of installation. Follow those instructions to the letter.  Use every part required and do not mix and match brands of Chimney or types of materials as this could cause an unsafe installation and a potential home fire.   If you need help, many good woodstove dealers offer services from in home consulting to complete installation.  Sometimes a few bucks spent up front with a pro to get some insight and pointers can save lots of mistakes and problems during the installation.  It is never a good idea to just invent your own wall pass-through and a homemade system could mean your insurance company would refuse a claim in the event of a fire. Older wall pass though methods required very large diameter metal thimbles with holes in them that you can see through from the outside all the way to the inside for air flow. Not very effecient for home heating and never really used.   If all this is overwhelming, find a good, experienced chimney sweep and have him clean and inspect what you currently have and tell you how to make it safe if needed. Make sure your sweep is well trained and not just a "cleaner".  Good Luck

  3. when i run a clay thimble through the wall i nail a couple of short 2 bys on the studs on each side of the hole ...then i lay a 2 by across the short 2 bys to give me a ledge to lay brick on...i surround the thimble with 6 - 8 in. of brick all the way out to the chimney...cover the brick with dry-wall

  4. With the proper "thimble" it is safe to pass a fluepipe through a wood frame wall.

A fireplace supply store will be able to supply & install the proper pass  through  & recommend the proper pipe to use.
