how does a plainer work?

A planer is ONLY used to thickness wood. You must run your board through a jointer first to get a flat bottom on the piece.Then edge join the piece.Once that's done you can run the piece through the planer making light passes to get the thickness you want.There are tons of great websites that get more specific on this.Just google the question.Hope this helps.Newwoodworker.com is one site.
