Woodbine Oaks favourite Inglorious outsmarts Spooky Kitten

After having being declared the 5-1 morning line favourite for the Woodbine Oaks, Inglorious, the Donver Stables owned filly, lived up to her reputation and won the $ 511,100 Woodbine Oaks.
The race was presented by Budweiser. The Woodbine Oaks was held on June 5, 2011. The post time for the race was 5:16 p.m. Nine fillies ran the nine furlongs race.
Woodbine Oaks is considered as a premier event for three year old fillies and this time around a duel between the Arosa Farms bred daughter of Hennessey, and, the Ken and Sarah Ramsey bred, Spooky Kitten.
Inglorious defeated Spooky Kitten with tactical brilliance that would have done credit to Napoleon Bonaparte. Inglorious was ridden by Luis Contreras.
Contreras commented on the filly’s performance “I wasn’t really worried, I was behind the horses, waiting [to make my move]. What can I say? She’s amazing. I think she can run on anything – do whatever you want. It doesn’t matter”.
Spooky Kitten turned out to be the pace-setter of the race. She hustled to the lead and the fractions set by her were 24.89 seconds, and, 50.57 seconds.
Bear It’s time and Marketing Mix were racing in close proximity. Inglorious all the while was racing in the mid pack on the outside, rose to the challenge set by Spooky Kitten. She surged past five opponents in the final in the final three-eighths of a mile.
She was seen switching to the outside rallying past Marketing Mix at the eighth pole. Inglorious took dead aim at Spooky Kitten and won the race in a final time of 1 minute and 51 seconds.
Spooky Kitten is conditioned by Mark E. Casse and she was ridden by Edgar S. Prado. She came second 1 1/4 length ahead of Marketing Mix.
This was bay filly’s fourth win from six time races. It also marked the first for her trainer, Josie Carroll in the Woodbine Oaks. Carroll also becomes the second female trainer to win the Woodbine Oaks. The first was by Carolyn Costigan’s and her horse
was Roan Inish.
Inglorious, as a two year old, won the Fanfreluche held on October 24, 2010 and Ontario Lassie Stakes held on December 4, 2010. She then made her way to Fair Grounds to take part in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes. She was second in the April 19, 2011
event.
On her return to Canada she brought another win for Donver Stables by winning the 1 1/16-mile La Lorgnette Stakes held on May 15, 2011.
Inglorious by winning this race earned $300,000 for her owners Donver Stables. Her bank roll has now been boosted to $650,000.
Despite her outstanding performance in the prep for the Queen’s Plate, Inglorious’s trainer still has reservations about racing the filly in the $1 million Canadian classic, Queen Plate, on June 26, 2011.
Carroll has won the 2006 Queen’s Plate with Edenwold. Carroll spoke about Inglorious in the following manner:
“She does what you ask her to do, the only thing I said to Luis before the race is to just ride her with patience and confidence, and she’ll do the rest, and that’s what he did. She jumped out early, and he eased her back and some horses came around her.
She didn’t panic. He didn’t panic. They relaxed and did their thing”.
