Wooden dining table damage

Question

My daughter used nail polish remover on my wood dining table.It's spotty to say the least and there are still areas where a little cotton fiber is stuck in the varnish. Can this be removed safely and how can I "cover" or fix the areas that are damaged and make it shiny and smooth again?

It has to be stripped and refinished now unless you know the ORIGINAL product that was used to do the finish work to begin with
