Question:

Wooden piccolo models?

I've been hunting for some wooden piccolos lately after using my middle school's wood piccolo, which I loved. So after I had to return it, I found a Yamaha 62 and Yamaha 81 piccolo, both for a good price.

I'm not sure what the difference between them is, does anyone here know? All I know is that the 81 is crafted from finer wood, but I'm not exactly sure if that really does anything to the overall quality of the instrument.

If you could answer my question, that'd be great. Thanks!

  1. Hi Michael,

Good choices... both Yamaha 62 and 81.  There is not enough difference in the two to justify the $500.00 difference in price.

Some 7 or 8 years ago the 62 was the top of the line professional level piccolo.  Then the 81 and 82 came along.

What I understand is that the  81 is completely handcrafted - handmade while the 62 isn't.

If you still have trouble deciding,  you might just want to play them both.    I have had both models and can be honest in saying,  I could not tell the difference in sound or playing.   I think I will send along the link I found from Yamaha and let you read the descriptions yourself.

    Thanks for reading.  :))
