Wooden pipe for tobacco?

What wood would be the best to make it out of with hand tools though, and what type of and tools would I need, and how much would it all cost?

  1. Briar or cherry are the traditional pipe woods.

    (Prime Briar 'blanks' can be expensive.)

    Any dense hardwood will serve.

    You'll need a long thin drill for the stem, and ordinary

    carving tools, ( knife, rasps, etc.),  for the rest.
