Former Stoke City defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jonathan-Woodgate-c19069 revealed that his decision to part ways with the Potters, in order to join Middlesbrough was not an easy one. However, he set himself the target of helping the Boro win promotion back to the Premier League.
The 32-year old, who earlier represented Middlesbrough from 2006 to 2008, arrived at the Britannia Stadium in July, 2011, after spending a brief spell at Tottenham Hotspur in between. After being hampered by recurring injuries, the English International managed to make just 21 appearances in all competitions for the Potters during the preceding term.
With the player facing an uncertain future at the Premier League, he opted to move to the Championship outfit, and penned a three year deal with the Boro on 6th of July.
Having failed to establish himself at Real Madrid, Tottenham, Newcastle United and Stoke, Woodgate admitted that his decision to make another switch came after a long consideration process. He also indicated that it was influenced by the fact that he wanted to help the Boro ascend back to the Premier League, and his move to Middlesbrough will also allow him to get closer to his family.
While talking to reporters, he said: “I had to think about it because it wasn't an easy decision to make… I could have stayed in the Premier League but coming back to Boro was a big pull for me. I want to try and get them back in the Premier League.”
All in all, the defender has made 331 club appearances over a period of almost 14 years and scored 9 goals. During this time, he represented 6 different clubs.
Nevertheless, Woodgate also unravelled that before signing the deal with his new employers, he received a phone call from chairman, Steve Gibson who inquired him if he was willing to play for Middlesbrough again.
