Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and Graeme McDowell paired up in same group for Cadillac Championship
Tiger Woods will tee off with Masters Champion Phil Mickelson and US Open winner Graeme McDowell in a threesome format for the opening round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship at the Doral Resort and Spa.
An interesting line-up will be seen in the Cadillac Championship, which will take place at the Blue Monster golf course of Doral Resort and Spa in Miami, Florida.
Cadillac Championship is the second leg of the World Golf Championships and will be attracting all the top 50 players of the Official World Golf Rankings. Looking at the situation, the officials have decided to put the two Americans in the same group. Moreover,
they have paired them with the Northern Irish star McDowell who defeated them in Celtic Manor in October 2010.
This is the 27th occasion that the two Americans are being paired together in a tournament on the Professional Golf Association Tour. Earlier, the organisers kept them in separate batches to cash on maximum time on television. But since the duo
has slipped in rankings, the organisers have decided to lift the extra limelight being showered on them.
However, according to the officials, the reason behind the pairings is slightly different. For the very first time, each one of the top fifty players will be teeing off at the event. Therefore, the management decided to pair them according to the rankings
which is why Woods and Mickelson are in the same group.
The duo’s last pairing was seen in the final round of the BMW Championship in Chicago. Mickelson made a 67, while Woods shot a 70. A steady fight was observed between the duo who has been in a race of staying ahead since 1997 and interestingly, holds the
highest margin of victories on the PGA Tour. Woods has 71 wins while Mickelson has 38, which when combined are more than the aggregate victories earned by the entire field.
In addition, Martin Kaymer, Lee Westwood and Luke Donald will also play alongside Woods and Mickelson in the same group.
