Woods finally gets some good news
Tiger Woods has lost a lot since his much-publicized s*x scandal broke in November, including his marriage, his worldwide adoration, and many of his profitable sponsorships, including
Accenture, AT&T, and Gatorade.
He has also lost, albeit likely temporarily, his golf game. This year was his first as a professional in which Woods’ went winless.
So when construction on Woods’ first American golf course, The Cliffs at High Carolina, resumed after developers agreed to tweak the project to reduce its negative effects on the local
trout population, Woods had some good news for the first time in awhile.
Woods’ vision for the project, located in Asheville, N.C., is to build a walkable mountain golf course with scenic views.
"High Carolina remains a truly amazing golf course," he said. "I’m looking forward to getting back there to check on construction."
The Southern Environmental Law Center did not approve of the permits given to the project by North Carolina’s Department of Environment and Natural Resources, citing the project’s negative
impact on trout streams.
The response from The Cliffs was swift. They immediately contacted the complainants in an effort to come to a solution that satisfies all parties involved.
"There was a lot of back and forth," said DJ Gerken, attorney for the Southern Environmental Law Center. "Eventually, The Cliffs came up with a creative solution."
The changes to the design of the course will make the walks between holes a little longer and will shorten some of the holes. But because the new layout will reduce the impact on trout
streams in the area, the work will go on.
With major construction having resumed on the course, which is being built 1,200m above sea level in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is expected to open in the fall of 2012.
Woods has two other golf courses in construction, one located in Dubai and the other in Mexico. If all goes according to plan, they should open about the same time as The Cliffs.
Woods, whose PGA Tour season ended with the BMW Championship in September, will tee it up at the Ryder Cup in Wales in October.
