Woods set for Tavistock Cup comeback?

Now Tiger Woods has finished his stint in rehab, can we expect to see the man back in action anytime soon? A new report suggests that Woods could make his intensely anticipated comeback at the little known Tavistock Cup in March.

Woods might be done with s*x therapy (though a blurry photo that looked like Woods was the nearest we got to confirmation that he even signed up with the specialist clinic in the first place), but so far there's no official word on his plans for the coming months. But while the world No. 1 is typically saying nothing, rampant speculation about his return continues.

Last week, a number of news stories suggested that Woods could make his comeback at next week's World Match Play Championship in Arizona - never mind that the tournament is sponsored by Accenture, the same company that dropped Woods from a separate sponsorship deal earlier this year.

In any case, Woods' caddie Steve Williams was blunt in his denial of this supposed comeback. "The stories stating Tiger will return at the Match Play have no truth to them," Williams told the Sydney Morning Herald.

But still, Woods is out now, supposedly reunited with his wife and kids and trying to make a go of his marriage - and the PGA tour will undeniably suffer a decline in interest if Woods doesn't return soon. Might a proposed reappearance at the Tavistock Cup have the ring of truth to it?

The story comes from the notorious celebrity gossip site TMZ, who broke many of the allegations about Woods’ private life. The site claims that the Tavistock suits Woods because of its low-key nature - taking place at Isleworth, the Cup is a private contest between residents of two of Florida's gated golfing communities. Neither the media nor the public would have much in the way of access to the star if he chose to return here.

The story makes some kind of sense, given Woods' repeated (if optimistic) desire for privacy, and apparently the information comes from "somebody who works for the Woods family". If the report is accurate, it suggests Woods is trying to get in some manner of practice under competitive conditions, presumably before returning to the PGA Tour.

If Woods does play the Tavistock Cup in March, one reasonable hypothesis is that the 34-year-old is aiming to get his game into some kind of shape before heading to the Masters in April. For now however, while the subject of Tiger Woods' return has inspired a whole lot of conjecture, the truth remains as elusive as the man himself.
