  1. some local colleges run gnvq course in capentry and joinery and sometimes they run city and guilds the guilds are worth more and take three years

  2. It will depend on how old you are.

The traditional route would be an apprenticeship with an employer (mainly work-based with day-release to college).  Funding for apprenticeships usually goes up to the age of 25 - but you would need to complete it before this age - so most employers tend to look for 16-19/20/21 year olds.

The other route would be to do a carpentry/joinery course at your local college further education (although these tend to be very popular and may already be full for September 2007).  Some of these courses may be part-time and are primarily for apprentices to do their day-release training.  Full-time courses may be 2 to 5 days a week.  The down-side with colege courses is the lack of an employer placement, which often means that people either have to start job-hunting at the end of the course, or consider setting themselves up as elf-employed.

You may also find that there are some training providers in your area that specialise in joinery training and assist people in finding an employer placement to start an apprenticeship.  Again, the above age restriction apply.

If you are in England and are 19 or under then contact your local Connexions service.

If you are in Scotland or Wales, regardless of your age, contact Careers Scotland or Careers Wales.

You can obtain further information about woodwork careers via www.connexions-direct.com (Jobs4U section).

  3. try an apprenticeship

  4. start off with a college course - maybe night school classes to see if you like it for sure.

i teach it. and i love it.

    good luck!

  5. Contact the larger construction companies in your area and ask them if they vacancies or for the opportunity to shadow and help the carpenter they employ.

Also contact any colleges near you to see if they have any City & Guild or NVQ Carpentry Courses on offer that still have places.
