Woody Austin wins the Sanderson Farms Championship – Golf News
Woody Austin birdied the first extra hole in the playoffs of the Sanderson Farms Championship to claim the fourth PGA Tour victory of his career, on Sunday, July 21, 2013.
The tournament was hosted by the Annandale Golf Club and was being played at the same time when The Open Championship was in progress.
Right from the beginning of the tournament, Austin remained consistent and posted some decent scores on the leaderboard.
He carded 69 and 65 in the first two rounds and comfortable made the cut to qualify for the weekend rounds. He then recorded a 67 on day three and finished just two strokes behind the leaders and shared the third spot on the leaderboard.
The fourth round witnessed him adding four birdies and an amazing eagle to his scorecard, while conceding just one bogey to settle for a 20-under par tournament score.
Meanwhile, Daniel Summerhays and Cameron Beckman also managed the same scores and forced the game to enter the sudden death playoffs.
On the first extra hole, both Summerhays and Beckman settled for a bogey and a par, respectively, while Austin turned in the ball for a birdie putt, which was enough for him to celebrate his success.
Talking to the reporters after the victory, Austin expressed his pleasure in enjoying a victory on the PGA Tour even at the age of 49 years. He believes that he still has the skills to contend strongly in the events he participates
in.
"I've always told everybody I want to play out here," Austin said. "I'm one of those people who doesn't like a number. I don't like the idea that people say, 'Oh, you're 50 years old, you're not good enough to play anymore and
need to go play with the old guys."
"It's been a long road and a long time," Austin said. "Now I've got a job again."
The victory also made him eligible to participate in this year’s PGA Championship, the fourth major golf championship of the season.
"I still want to, you know, probably stupidly think that I want to play a couple or more majors on the regular Tour, and I want one more shot at a Ryder Cup or President's Cup," Austin said.
