Woon Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo stun Pan Pan and Cheng Shu in quarter-final: Indonesia Open GP Gold
Malaysia’s young pair of Woon Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo delivered a stunning performance and made an upset by beating higher ranked Pan Pan and Cheng Shu in the Women’s Doubles quarter-final of the Indonesia Open GP Gold, in Indonesia, on Friday, September
30.
Khe Wei and Vivian played phenomenal badminton against the Chinese duo and worked really hard to win the nail-biting battle in three games. The Malaysian proved that they have touched the level of elite shuttlers.
The Chinese ladies failed to put up a strong show against the lower ranked shuttlers from Malaysia. Pan and Cheng lost the first game but returned back in the second one. In the decider, the Chinese duo failed to dominate the game and lost it to the in-form
Malaysians.
In the first game of the match, the Chinese shuttlers were struggling against the passionate Malaysians. Khe Wei and Vivian played flawless badminton and won the first set with a comfortable score of 21-15.
The Chinese pair recovered well in the second game as they played remarkable badminton. The Malaysians played negative shots in the second-half of the game and lost it by an 18-21 score on the board.
In the decider, the score remained tied until the ending points when the Malaysians took over the control and won the set by a margin of 21-18. The ending score of this thrilling encounter was 21-15, 18-21 and 21-18.
Rexy Mainaky, Malaysia’s Women’s Doubles coach was happy with the performance of the duo. Rexy said, “I have observed them for some time now and they have plenty of potential. Now they are proving that they are indeed a very good combination and we can see
them really improving.”
He further added, “However, I don't want to rush them into big tournaments and just focus on producing results in the grand prix gold events. Once they build their confidence, then it is time to regularly play in the Super Series where they will be ready
to face the challenge against top 10 pairs.”
In the Women’s Doubles semi-final, Khe Wei and Vivian will take on Thailand’s Punyada Munkitchokecharoen and Sujitra Ekmongkolpaisarn.
