http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 batsman Phil Hughes in a bid to bring him back to the New Road as their overseas player for the 2013 season. The club management has also confirmed that they have held initial talks with the top order batsman.
Worcestershire’s director of cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 last night, after a 10-day trip Down Under. The Royals revealed that Rhodes staged discussions with the 23-year-old New South Welshman and his representatives to convince him to return to the club next season.
The Royals had a disappointing 2012 season which saw them losing their Division One status in the LV = County Championship. The 23-year-old New South Welshman, who has also played 17 Tests for his country and averages almost 35 with the bat, finished top of Worcestershire’s batting averages in all three formats of the game last season, with 100.5 in the Friends Life T20 tournament, 83 in the Clydesdale Bank 40 competition and 35 in the LV = County Championship.
Worcestershire CCC’s chief executive http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Antony-Leatherdale-c52639 told media reporters that the club was keen to have Hughes back in the side for the 2013 season, adding that the player was also interested in returning to the New Road.
"We've held initial talks with Phil and his representative, which was the main purpose of Steve's trip to Australia," the Worcestershire chief executive David Leatherdale told Press Association Sport on the sidelines of a promotional event.
"Those discussions will be ongoing. We’re keen to have Phil back and he has made it clear to us that he is keen to come back. He came here with a purpose last season to show what he could do, demonstrated he was a gritty character and played well in all forms of cricket," he added further.
However, the Australian opener’s return to the New Road will depend on his potential international commitments next year, admitted the Worcestershire chief executive David Leatherdale.
"But it’ll depend on his commitments with Australia. He’s currently on the fringe of international set-up," said Leatherdale. "If he performs well this winter he could be pushing forward for a place," he added further.
