Worcestershire v http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Essex-c783 - Clydesdale Bank 40 (Group A) – Match Update – Centurion Mark Pettini guides Essex to 25-run victory
A run-a-ball hundred by skipper Mark Pettini, with supporting performances by Tom Westley and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RN-ten-Doeschate-c2338, enabled Essex to claim a 25-run win over Worcestershire during a Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A match, played on July 29 at the County Ground at
New Road in Worcester.
With Worcestershire having won the toss and elected to field first, Essex opened their innings with Pettini (111) and Westley (62), both of whom established a substantial 113-run foundation for their side. Pettini slammed 7 fours and 3 sixes, and the opening
stand swelled to a three-digit figure by the 19th over.
Brett D'Oliveira dismissed Westley via run out in the 21st over, with a direct throw from gully, and he was followed to the crease by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/OA-Shah-c2134 (28). Pettini went on to establish a 65-run stand with Shah, and the two got their side up to 178
by the 32nd over, after which the latter was caught out by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Lucas-c1332 off Jack Shantry.
Ten Doeschate was up next, and chipped in with a quick-fire unbeaten 50 off 24 deliveries, which formed part of a 56-run stand with Pettini. The skipper (who went on to win the Player of the Match award) was eventually dismissed by Lucas, caught by Daryl
Mitchell at wide mid-off, but ten Doeschate powered on, and accompanied by Adam Wheater (6) and then http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Greg-Smith-c1508 (4), brought Essex up to 269 by the end of 40 overs.
A half-ton by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harbhajan-Singh-c61453 (8-0-56-2) refusing to let the batsmen settle in at the crease.
Openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moeen-Ali-c1990 (42) and Vikram Solanki (7) were both sent back to the pavilion by the 12th over, and barring Hughes’ valiant 68, Gareth Andrew’s 32 remained the highest individual score registered by the remainder of the batting order. The
highest partnership was the 67-run 6th wicket stand between Hughes and Andrew – otherwise, Worcestershire’s innings were peppered with a slew of erratic performances.
Mitchell’s men managed to reach a mere 244 by the end of 40 overs, slumping to their fourth CB40 defeat in a row, but despite the victory having enabled them to secure two match points, Essex still remain below http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Worcestershire-c866 on the CB40 Group A points table.
