Worcestershire 270/3 (96.0 ov) v Somerset - Worcestershire won the toss and elected to bat
Wednesday, May 30: On the first day of the four-day match in the ongoing County Championship Division One tournament between Worcestershire and Somerset at County Ground, New Road, Worcester, Worcestershire bolstering an impressive batting performance by hammering a decent total of 270 runs for the loss of three wickets, batted sensibly not to lose their wickets in order to give their opponents a tough time in the coming days.
Worcestershire openers DKH http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-c76390 and PJ Hughes gave their side a stupendous start as they smashed the bowlers out of town early in the innings in order to achieve complete superiority.
While the batsmen clobbered the bowlers, making the fielders chase the ball, the bowlers looked completely out of phase and worn-out in the early half of the day.
Somerset fielders just never looked focussed in the middle as they failed to put pressure on the batsmen in order to halt the belligerent batting onslaught.
The opening duo of Mitchell and Hughes belted a stupendous opening stand of 100 runs to put their side in the lead, leaving Somerset in complete disarray.
Somerset’s strike bowler, PD Trego, then rose to the occasion, as he broke the lethal partnership by nabbing the wickets of Hughes, who edged a delivery to wicketkeeper, Kieswetter, after bolstering an innings of 53 runs.
Eighty runs were then added in the partnership of VS Solanki and Mitchell, where once again the batsmen dominated the bowlers and hammered sensational shots without a hint of remorse.
It was then AV Suppiah’s turn to shine as he sent Mitchell back to the pavilion after the phenomenal opener had smashed an innings of 80 runs.
MM Ali was then the next man to come in the middle, and he also managed to give the fielding side a headache by denying them his wicket.
The batsman made a contribution of 20 runs before losing his wicket to Trego at a time when his side had amassed 237 runs on the board.
The side later ended the day with 270 runs on the scorecard with Solanki standing on 82 and JG Cameron on 14 runs.
