South Africans 237/9d v Worcestershire 70/3 (22.0 ov) - Worcestershire trail by 167 runs with 7 wickets remaining in the 1st innings
July 27, 2012: At stumps, on the first day of the two-day tour match between South Africans and Worcestershire, the latter trail by 167 runs with seven wickets in hand, at County Ground, New Road, Worcester.
South Africans chose to bat first on winning the toss, but failed to get off to a commendable start, losing their first wicket with only 12 runs on the board.
Proteas opener, JA Rudolph, became the first wicket of the day, faltering after scoring a knock of seven runs.
AN Petersen and AB de Villiers then took charge, and exhibited their superiority by smashing the bowlers all around the park.
However, with 21 runs on the tally, Petersen became the second wicket of day, perishing after scoring 10 runs.
de Villiers was then joined by JP Duminy and the duo took the score to 74, before RA Jones trapped Duminy in front of stumps, after he had scored a knock of five runs off 34 deliveries.
JA Morkel then joined the party, as the South Africans raised h**l on the fielding side, taking the score to a massive 165 runs.
The partnership was broken on the demise of Morkel, who had his stumps obliterated by CJ Russell, after hammering an astounding knock of 50 runs.
With 185 runs on the scoreboard, de Villiers also hit the showers, after losing his wicket to J Leach on a tally of 80 runs.
VD Philander then exhibited his commendable batting, as he countered the bowlers and kept the scoreboard ticking.
South Africans declared their first innings on a tally of 237, with VD Philander unbeaten after contributing 40 runs.
Worcestershire had a terrible start to their innings, as they lost their first wicket without a run on the board.
With only four runs on the scoreboard, they suffered the demise of their second wicket, putting enormous pressure on the remaining batting line-up.
However, MG Pardoe’s 40-run knock prevented the side from collapsing before stumps, as they ended the day by bolstering a total of 70 runs for the loss of three wickets.
