The visitors would have been pleased with the total they reached, especially after being put into bat by the Sussex skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MH-Yardy-c1946.
However, the pitch had eased out for the batsmen and the hosts would have been looking to bat once in the match, scoring a massive first innings total.
Things did not work out well for the home team though, as they were all out for 265 runs in their first outing, conceding a first innings lead of 25 runs. Opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joe-Gatting-c1710 was the top scorer for his side, collecting 61 runs at the top of the order.
Sussex’s start was a decent one, as openers Gatting and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ed-Joyce-c1417 collected 57 runs for the first wicket partnership. The latter was unable to make most of the start he got to his innings and was the first wicket to fall after adding 27 runs to the total with the help of four boundaries.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Wells-c1859 was the next man to be dismissed in the innings after failing to make an impression. He got out for a duck, leaving his side under a spot of bother at 62 for the loss of 2 wickets.
Gatting did not panic under pressure and continued to play solid cricket. He ended up with 61 runs off just 77 balls with the help of 11 classy fours. His wicket saw the hosts three down within 100 runs.
Yardy looked well set at the crease, as he had scored 18 runs off 33 balls. He failed to capitalise on the start though, as was the fourth wicket to fall in the innings. He was followed by wicketkeeper batsman Ben Brown, who managed 19 runs off 12 balls in his cameo.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kirk-Wernars-c71515. The pair put together 61 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before the former got out after contributing 48 runs to the total.
However, Wernars continued to bat well and ended up with a solid knock of 53 runs with the help of six boundaries. He lacked support from the other end, as the lower-order struggled to cope up with the pressure and the entire team was dismissed for 265 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Saeed-Ajmal-c87859, who dismissed a couple of batsmen.
