http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sussex-c852: County Championship Division One – Sussex’s Second Innings
Sussex needed 337 runs for victory against Worcestershire in a match of the County Championship Division One at the Cricket Field Road Ground, Horsham in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Saturday, August 13, 2011.
The hosts required a solid start by their top-order, but had a miserable beginning, losing a few wickets cheaply. However, they came very close to victory in the end, but were still short by 34 runs, getting all out for 302 runs.
The pitch was very good for the batsmen, as the ball was coming onto the bat nicely. However, there was some assistance for the spinners as well, which allowed the visitors to win the match in the end.
Sussex’s opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Joe-Gatting-c1710 was the first man to be dismissed in the innings. He did a decent job in the first innings, but was unable to make an impression this time, getting out for 6 runs.
The next man to be dismissed in the innings was http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Luke-Wells-c1859, who got out after a struggling 9 runs off 30 balls.
Just three balls later, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/William-Anthony-Adkin-c96710 was also sent back to the pavilion after adding 17 runs to the total, leaving the hosts struggling at 52/4.
Worcestershire had the upper hand at that stage of the game and appeared to win the match by a comprehensive margin. They had to deal with the experience of Zimbabwe’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MH-Yardy-c1946.
The pair put together 151 runs for the fifth wicket partnership, rescuing their side from trouble. The momentum had shifted right with Sussex, but Yardy finally got out after contributing 63 runs to the total with the help of eight boundaries.
Wicketkeeper batsman Ben Brown was the next man to be dismissed in the innings after adding 10 runs to the total. However, the bigger loss for the hosts was the downfall of Goodwin, who had batted superbly in the match.
The veteran Zimbabwean got out after collecting 122 runs off 193 balls, striking 14 classy fours in his impressive knock. He would have been terribly disappointed to give his wicket away at that stage and would have liked to bat until the end.
This brought immense pressure on the Sussex lower-order, as there was not much batting left for the team. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kirk-Wernars-c71515 managed 24 runs down the order, but failed to last longer. He was the eighth wicket to fall in the innings.
South Africa’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/WD-Parnell-c2787 remained unbeaten on 19, but ran out of partners from the other end, as the team was all out for 302 runs.
Pakistan’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Saeed-Ajmal-c87859 was the difference between the two sides, as he picked up a six-wicket haul in the innings.
