Another rain curtailed day in the County Championship saw Somerset ending Day 2 on 27 for 2 after http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Peter-Trego-c2181’s five-for had halted Worcestershire to 340 in the morning session at County Ground, New Road, Worcester, on May 31, 2012.
The day however, was all about disappointment and frustration for Somerset’s Nick Compton, who failed to reach 1000 runs before end of May – a rare achievement in the County Championship. Had rain not intervened, the player would have joined an illustrious group who has achieved such feat, including one Don Bradman. The last batsman to complete such effort was England’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Graeme-Ashley-Hick-c60468, way back in 1988.
Compton’s dream was cut short when he was batting at 9, along with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Hildreth-c1647, when the umpires called the players off owing to rain. The rain persisted thereafter and the decision to end the day’s play was taken shortly – leaving the 28-year-old struck on 950 first-class runs this term.
Somerset nonetheless, will still be relieved by their standing after they had bowled out the hosts earlier in the day. Resuming on 270 for 3, Worcester were undone by Trego, who added three crucial wickets to his overnight two, completing an impressive five-wicket haul.
His scalps included the all-important one of centurion Vikram Solanki. The top-order batter compiled a praise worthy knock of 106, which included 14 fours and 1 six. His wicket though, followed a bit of a later order collapse with the final five wickets adding just 38 to the total. All http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 bowlers chipped in with at least one wicket.
Their reply dealt early blows with openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Arul-Suppiah-c1084 (1) and Alex Barrow (10) departing early but the ultimate heartache was left for Compton, who watched the English weather again spoiling the party.
"It is all a bit of an anticlimax," he said afterwards. "I must be honest there have been a few sleepless nights thinking about the possibility of getting those thousand runs. The more articles you read, the more you think about those illustrious cricketing names that have achieved it, you start to pinch yourself and start to think 'wow, it would be really great if I could be one of them'.
“I must admit, wondering if we could get out there again but, as ever http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 has let me down with the weather,” added Compton.
