Worcestershire’s Vikram Solanki moves to Surrey – Cricket News Update
Worcestershire’s top order batsman and former skipper Vikram Solanki will leave New Road at the end of ongoing season to join http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Antony-Leatherdale-c52639.
“We understand Vikram has now received and accepted an offer from Surrey and therefore reluctantly Vikram will be leaving the club at the end of the season,” David Leatherdale, the Worcestershire CEO, told reporters on Friday.
Solanki’s contract with Royals was due to expire at the end of the ongoing season, and the club was reluctant in granting him an extension for another season at New Road, especially after signing seamer http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Alan-Richardson-c42776 on a two-year deal just a couple of
weeks ago. Leatherdale admitted that the county was unable to offer fresh terms to the right-hander, who is indisputably their longest-serving player.
“Vikram approached the club a few weeks ago with regards his future, as his contract ends this September,” said the Worcestershire CCC’s chief executive.
“The club fully understood Vikram's wish to have greater certainty about his future and gave permission for him to talk to other counties due to his long standing at the club,” he added further.
Solanki, the 36-year-old top order batsman, started his first-class career with the Royals back in 1995. He not only served the county as a classy top order batsman, but also with his leadership qualities.
Thanking the right-hander for his contribution to Worcestershire cricket over the years, Leatherdale wished him very good for his future endeavours.
“The club and its supporters thank Vikram for his 20 years of service to the county, and for his elegant batting and successful captaincy,” said Royals’ CEO.
The Indian-born laky top-order batsman also said that leaving New Road was not an easy decision for him, and assured the Royals his 100 percent commitment until the end of the ongoing 2012 season. He also thanked Surrey for allowing him to end his cricketing
career, spanning over almost two decades, at Kia Oval.
Solanki’s move will bolster Surrey’s batting line up that has been dented by the loss of three first-choice batsmen – Tom Maynard to a tragic death, regular skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Rory-Hamilton-Brown-c2366 to an indefinite compassionate leave (following flatmate Maynard’s death)
and Mark Ramprakash to retirement.
