Worchester Warriors coach Richard Hill demands a better defensive effort
Worchester Warriors coach Richard Hill has admitted that he is concerned by his team’s defensive effort at home.
Speaking to BBC Hereford and Worchester, the former England World Cup winner said, "Most of our tries have been conceded at home, we've got to stop that trend. The objective will be to keep our defence as tight as it has been away from home."
Worchester currently top the English Championship and are expected to gain promotion into the Aviva Premiership next season. Yet, Hill has reason to be concerned about the number of basic errors in the Worchester defence during home matches.
"We've just got to have that same level of concentration and same determination not to allow sloppy tries here. I think it shows there's probably a bit of extra concentration for away matches when the chips are down," he said.
Despite Hill’s concerns, Worchester find themselves six points clear of their closest rivals Bedford.
The coach insisted that his players will be examined closely due to the dropping standards during home games.
"We have had a good look at most of the players in the first 11 games. We are going to put them under the microscope now for the next 11 and they really will be analysed in great detail,” said Hill.
Worchester lost their last home game 21-23 to the Cornish Pirates and Hill is adamant that his players will know exactly what their role is when defending.
"I think at the end of this week, before we go into the next round of games, the players will have had virtually all the information that we need to impart to them in defence and attack."
The former English forward stated that the whole squad had a chance of playing in the play-offs if they performed.
"Now it is putting each player under the microscope and this is the first 22 who get the opportunity to really stake their claim for the play-offs," said Hill.
Every player will be particularly keen to prove their defensive abilities for Worchester’s next home match against Plymouth Albion on Saturday 13 November.
