The Wilsons build a deck 240 degress around their 20-ft diameter round pool. How many feet of fence do they need to go around the pool that is not surrounded by the deck? Round to the nearest half-foot.

Help is much appreciated. Thanks much.

  1. 120 degrees is not surrounded by the deck

    Therefore,

    120/360 x 22/7 x 10^2

    =1/3 x 22/7 x 100

    =220/21

    Simplify and round off.

  2. The circumference of the pool is 2*PI*radius.

    That works out to 2*(22/7)*(20/2),

so that is 220 feet for the circumference.

There are 240 degrees of desk, and a complete circle is 360 degress so the part of the pool that does NOT have deck is 120 degrees out of 360.

That is 1/3 of the circumference.

    So 220*(1/3)=220/3 = 73.333333....

ROunded to the nearest half fooot that is 73.5 linear feet of fence needed.
