Metro is short for Metropolitan, referring to a city area. Subways are underground, many places in North America have Metro systems that are above ground. Wash. DC area ( where I live at ), is partially both, underground in DC, above ground in Virginia and Maryland. It's called The Metro, not a Subway. Or Metrorail. Anyway, it's a reference to a city-area light rail passenger system.
