Jack's overtime wage is $3 per hour more than his regular hourly wage. He worked for 5 hours at his regular wage and 4 hours at the overtime wage. He earned $66. Find his regular wage.

I don't want the answer! I just need a walk through!

  1. Alright, so what I would do is make his regular hourly wage equal x. Then set up the problem like this:

    5x+4(x+3)=66

    And then you solve the equation for x.


  2. If x is Jack's regular wage then his OT wage is simply x + 3

    Therefore;

    5 hours times his regular wage + 4 hours times his OT wage = 66

    or

    5x + 4(x + 3) = 66

    5x + 4x + 12 = 66

    9x + 12 = 66

  3. jack's overtime is $12 because 3*4 is 12

    then take 12 minus 66 = 54

    then take  54/5=  and it is  __$5.75 per hour
