  1. An alternative to Microsoft Office (which has Word in it) would be Open Office.  It essentially have everything that Microsoft Office has but is free.

  2. Wordpad in VISTA is a stripped down word processor, it was NOT designed or intended to take the place of Microsoft Office.

You need to BUY Office it is NOT free.

You can download "open office" here:  http://www.openoffice.org/

It has most of the features and is compatible with Microsoft office.

  3. You can download a great FREE tool that works similar to wordpad if you look for PFE - Programmer's File Editor.

MS Word is not free.  You have to buy it, usually bundled with all the other stuff in MS Office.

Or you can get a FREE set of the same types of tools at openoffice.org.  And they are compatible with the comparable microsoft tools and files.
