Question:

Work Issue. Please Help? Can I get the Boot Because of This Mistake?

I sent out a subcontract and I added some information that was only for our company to see and not the sub that will be doing the work for us. I send our price sheet to the sub that has no clue what we charge the third party until today because of my mistake. My boss saw this and asked me about it because he had to sign off on it before I send out the signed originals he signs. Could I get the boot because of this?

  1. Legally, yes you can get the boot for not performing your job to the best of your ability if it had gone out without your boss' knowing.  I cannot stress how important paying attention to detail is in the business world.  Luckily, it was stopped before it made it to the public eye.  Your boss may give you a slap on the wrist but I highly suggest doing some damage control by taking him aside and assuring him it was an honest mistake...that you will try harder in the future to pay more attention to detail.  When he sees that you are trying to improve...I'm sure he will give you another shot.  Good luck.

  2. I don't think so.

If it had gone out, it would depend on reaction of the sub, it may be that they had a good idea of what you charged anyway.  I would think they would have guessed it was more or less what your sheet showed.

Next time be more careful, and thank your boss.

  3. I think this all depends on your boss.  If the subcontract did not actually go out, then no harm was done -- except to you, because you could have really screwed up the project!  Your boss might see this as a learning experience for you...or he might see it as a major goof!  Let your boss know that in the future, you will keep your 'thinking cap' on and not do this again.

This kind of thing happens all the time in business.  Let me tell you a story...Several years ago, I received a notice from our local city/county zoning board that a man wanted a variance to add an addition onto his house.  I owned the adjacent property.  I had no objection to his adding on, and sent his attorney a note to that effect.  The attorney sent me a 'thank you' note, but stapled to it was their plans to take over, not only the access road to both our properties, but to take over a part of my property by Adverse Possession.  WOW!

I nipped THAT in the bud!  And somebody surely should have gotten THE BOOT for that!
