Work and study in the states

Question

I teach foreigners Chinese in China now. Is it possible for me to teach Chinese at a US university? What are the requirements for such a job?

Is it possible for me to teach Chinese and go to graduate school at the same time? Thanks a lot.

To teach at a university, you need a PhD in the subject you plan to teach. However, you can teach at a community college with a masters degree. And some universities will allow you to teach in their continuing education departments with just the masters.

Some community colleges will allow teachers with just a bachelors to teach there, if the subject they are teaching is in extremely high demand and they have problems finding teachers in that subject. Examples can be nursing and computer-related certifications.

If you go for your PhD in Chinese, you can get a teaching assistantship which will both pay for your tuition and allow you to teach Chinese at the university while you study. Some universities also allow full-time masters degree students to serve as TAs and teach. So that's certainly a possibility. But you'd be teaching in exchange for your tuition - not a bad deal.
