I am 23 about to graduate college and want a career in federal law enforcement. Would it be better to be a cop in a big agency for several years or join the military to improve my chances of being hired?

  1. Do the military time.  Much more beneficial to you as a character builder.  State and local law enforcement would be more like character suicide.

  2. This depends on a variety of factors.  If you have dependents (spouse and kids) then the military would be a good place to start.  With your degree you could become a Specialist (which is a rank of E-4) and be an MP.  The training would be free and the benefits are very good.  This will always look good when you apply to the Federal system.  You even get veteran's preference.  If you want something more specialized (like a Treasury Enforcement Agent or FBI) it would probably be better to start with them in either a internship or trainee program.  I will warn you that being an MP for the military is tough.  You will see the worst and best sides of soldiers, airmen, and sailors.  However, it will give you a big boost as well as experience right off the bat.  Talk to a recruiter but take what s/he says with a grain of salt.  Do a lot of research, everyone's situation is unique.

    Good luck!

  3. Depends on you, depends on the agency that you are looking at, depends upon the needs of the agency and the qualifications of all who apply.

I'm a Fed and I don't have any prior police service, do have prior military time.  Several of the officers I work with came straight from college, and others have been officers with local/state agencies.
