Work-at-home-mom income opportunities?

Question

I have a modest consulting business, and I am a WAHM. I recently moved to an expensive part of the country and wonder if anyone can suggest additional ways I can work from home. I have a nanny who travels with me so I can nurse my infant between meetings, so I can get out periodically to see clients. I have an MBA, if that helps.

I also want to homeschool this child, if I can afford it. Any ideas? Experiences to share?

Unfortunately, the only work at home opportunity I know of is with FTD. Work with them is not currently available in my area, but may be in yours. I am unaware of the amount of time you may have to commit, though. Sorry.

On the subject of homeschooling, it is an excellent idea. I will be happy to communicate with you about my experiences, curricula available, etc.

The persistent misconception regarding socialization (this is also in response to xelty whose response is above mine), is just that. A misconception. Please follow this link and read what I just wrote to another homeschooled student.

Is there any way for you to improve on distant communication? Using emails and phone more often? Using the internet more often? Once you met your client is there way to follow up without seeing them again?

Home schooling appears to be a good idea but I would not do it. The point of going to a school is also to learn about social life and how to live in a community. If you do not provide this to your child, she/he may face problems with adapting to new environments in the future. Why would you want to isolate your child?

What type of consulting do you do?  That would make a difference in the type of suggestions people might give.

If you are going to homeschool your child, figure out ways to serve the homeschool market.  I've seen one number (a few years out of date) that around $650M is spent every year on homeschooling and this is growing at about 8% per year.

I think there is a lot of opportunity to provide products and services of value to homeschoolers.

I would not recommend curriculum or magazines - it seems like "everyone and their sister" is doing this.

But, I think there are other needs besides books and periodicals.  Think about it? Ask around homeschool crowds. What is needed? What is missing? What makes your life the hardest?  Take those needs and wants and figure out a way to provide a solution.
