‘Work ethic’ - the secret behind the success of Asian golfers
Asian golfers have started to dominate the women golf world. According to Herbert Kohler Junior, the situation is the result of the work ethics of the golfers.
He was talking to the Associated Press about the impact of Asian golfers on golf and the reasons behind their meteoric rise in professional golf rankings.
Herbert Kohler is the head of Kohler Company, a multinational manufacturing and distribution organization. His company also owns golf courses that have hosted national and international golf events for many years.
The recent U.S. Women's Open was held at one of his golf courses, the Blackwolf Run Golf Club. This tournament was won by an Asian golfer, Na Yeon Choi from South Korea. This win brought to Kohler’s mind, another win that took place almost twenty years ago.
Reminiscing about another U.S. Women's Open that took place on the same course, Kohler was emphatic that the key to success of the Asian golfers is their culture and the values that the golfers derive from it.
The 1998 U.S. Women's Open was held in Blackwolf Run Golf Park. This event was won by South Korean star Se Ri Pak.
This was a historic moment in the history of South Korean golf. The win inspired many South Korean girls to take up golf.
Today there are a number of South Korean ladies in LET and LPGA, the two premier golf tours in the world. South Korea has produced remarkable golf players such as Amy Yang and Na Yeon Choi.
Kohler was very impressed by the 1998 win. He said that it was the main motivation for the current generation of the Asian women golfers. He said, “It stirred a nation, inspired this nation”.
Kohler was also of the opinion that the win was not the only reason of the Asian dominance over women’s golf.
He highlighted the habit of work that is highly valued in Asian culture. This, according to him is the main reason behind the success of these golfers.
Talking about the Asian habit of work, Kohler said, “These Asians have done so well because they know the meaning of work.” This statement has been echoed by many analysts in both sports and business worlds.
Kohler is well aware of the Asian habit of industry and work. He has several manufacturing facilities in China. He is very impressed by the work ethics of the Chinese workers.
He said, “We're very successful in China because of the attitude of those people toward work”.
The Kohler Company operates in Asian markets mainly through its Chinese presence. This presence has been crucial in building and maintaining business links throughout the continent.
Kohler Company is itself built on hard work by the Kohler family. The company was established in 1873. Today the group has grown into a multi-billion dollar enterprise with subsidiaries around the world.
Despite owing several golf courses and playing host to top international golf events, Herbert Kohler Junior is not a golf fan. He does not even know how to play the game. His father was an avid golfer and he has inherited his golf bag. But that is about
it.
However, Herbert Kohler Junior is well aware of the potential of golf and the revenues and goodwill that golf tournaments generate.
He is well aware of the publicity that golf provides to his manufacturing and hotel ventures. He will continue to play host to top LPGA events in near future.
