I want to get an internship, or maybe participate in some trainee program in the US. I assume companies require a visa for foreigners to work, but usually the consulate just issue you a visa if you already have an work opportunity.. So, how do I proceed in this case?

  1. Well...you have to be specific. Do you want an internship or do you want a trainee/job? If you truly want an internship, you don't need any specific visa (other than your embassy visa). Afterall, as an intern, you will not be financially compensated for your work.

Trainee or employee- that's another story. If you are interested of working within the scope of what you are allowed to do in the U.S. (meaning, if you are interested working on the up and up and not under the table) I recommend that you speak to the qualified staff personnel at your embassy to get the correct information you need regarding employment, because as an citizen, I really wouldn't know exactly what you needed to work legally in the U.S.

  2. No, they don't "just issue you a visa" if you have a job lined up.

If you find an employer willing to sponsor you the employer will have to obtain the visa for you.  It's a long and expensive process.  You must be a college educated professional with a skill that's in short supply in the United States.  The employer must prove to the US Department of Labor that there is no US citizen qualified and/or available to take the position.
