  1. Spain is fun and the people are all about partying first working later. There is a lot of camping through out Spain and it won't be dificult to find a place to camp... just look for the signs. Hostels are abundant also and as long as you are not in the touristy Southern Spain during May, June, July, August the prices are quite reasonable, 30-40 dollars per night. My brother-in-law told me last week he is paying between 4.85 and 5.85 per gallon for gas. Cruzcampo and San Miguel are two popular brands of beer you'll find in Spain 3-4 dollars a bottle at the bars, American beers are more expensive and German beers are about the same as it's Spanish counter part. I lived in Spain for 5 years and still have family there. There are some communist communities that don't take kindly to Americans but you would have to search hard to find them. Most of the Spanish people welcome Americans and their money and most businesses know enough English to sell their services. If you are going to spend your time in Northern Spain or Madrid it will be very hot and dry. Everyone flocks to Southern Spain - Rota, Malaga, Cadiz, Seville for the summer. There is a large Naval Base in Rota Spain and since it is a very touristy spot there is plenty of "contract" work all summer long. Developments never seem to stop appearing. Chipriona is about 12 miles from Rota and is a small fishing village with an awesome beach. Cheap hostels there and commuting in Spain is cheap and easy because of their superior public transportation system.

If you are freelancing another good place to pick up work and reasonable hostels and still have fun - night life and such is Puerto Santa Maria and Valdalagranna... Puerto is filled with night life and Valdalagranna is about 2 miles away and on the ocean... hope this helps.

  2. If you are looking for hostels, there is no better resource than Twizi. It is a web site that lists hostels that cost less than 25 dollars all over the world. In Spain they have two real detailed sections, Barcelona and Madrid. the links to these pages are below. Best of luck to you and your ventures!
