Workforce named Horse of the Year
The talented racehorse who displayed the best of his potential when he gave spectacular performances in the Derby and Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was indeed the most deserving candidate for the exalted award, Horse of the Year. The champion colt earned this
title at Racehorse Owner’s Association awards that kicked off on Thursday night in London.
This was the 29th edition of the prestigious award ceremony and was anticipated by all those involved in the horse business. The evening turned out to be very precious for the owner of Workforce, Khalid Abdullah, as he was adorned with five awards
on Thursday night including Owner of the Year Award.
Apart from the Horse of the Year Honour, Workforce was also nominated for the Three Year Old Colt’s title. Workforce was not the only winner that was owned by Khalid. His 2-year-old racehorse, Frankel, was the most popular choice in the two year old colt
category. Meanwhile, Tranquil Tiger also owned by Khalid claimed the all-weather horse of the year award for his splendid victory in the Winter Derby.
On the other hand, the winner of the July Cup, Starspangledbanner won the Outstanding Sprinter title in Flat Racing, while Rite Of Passage was named the Outstanding Stayer award. The former is also the winner of the Ascot Gold Cup.
Snow Fairy, the dual Oaks champion, claimed the three year old fillies’ award, while the winner of the Cherry Hinton Stakes, Memory managed to get the most number of votes by the fans of the sport and members of ROA, and thus won the two year old filly award.
King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot, Dandino was adorned with the Outstanding Handicapper award, meanwhile the superstar Goldikova earned the Outstanding Older Horse of the Year. She clinched victories in five Group I events this year.
The Outstanding Chaser Award went to the Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander, while the Outstanding Hurdler Crown was presented to Big Buck’s, who won the World Hurdle and is unbeaten for more than two years.
The members of the Racehorse Owner’s Association voted Newbury as the racecourse of the year since it hosted some of the most prestigious races that took place this year. This was sixth time in the previous seven years when the Berkshire track has been nominated
for this award.
