Question:

Workhouse Records (UK)?

Does anyone know if they put the UK workhouse records online?

My G-G-G-Grandfather(!) died in Kingston Union Workhouse in 1895. I have his death certificate, but I wanted to know how long he was in the workhouse, and if any other family members were there too.

So far I've not found anything in the censuses, but with a decade between each one, it's hard to tell what goes on. I saw on "Who Do You Think You Are" (Barbara Windsor) that they have records for some of the workhouses, telling you who was there, and how long they stayed.

If they're searchable online, do you know where? I haven't found anything yet, but maybe they're called something different.

And if they're not available online, I'm planning a trip to the National Archives, and wondered (*fingers crossed*) if they were there...

  1. good workhouse any country  all peplle happy

  2. According to my Ancestral Trails book there are records from 1834 (The Poor Law Commission) onwards in County Record Offices.  Some may have been transcribed by family history societies

If you mean Kingston (London) you can try Surrey Record Office or the Royal Borough of Kingston Upon Thames Record Office - details can be found online.

Interesting question because I've never really thought about it - I assumed that it would be a dead end but according to the book it won't be.

    Good luck!

  3. If your GGG Grandfather was in the Kingston Workhouse in 1891 then that would show up on the Census for that area. You can find that online at Ancestry.co.uk.

The records are held by the Surrey County records office.

  4. Have a look at the link posted below, I typed in the name of the workhouse in the search box on the left hand side and it came up with quite a lot of information in relation to Kingston Union Workhouse.

You could check the census returns for 1881, 1891 to see if your g-g-g-grandfather was in there at the time of any of those census.

    Hope this helps.
