Hey guys,

I'm looking to pick up some extra cash and want to work at a movie theater since I love movies and being in a movie theater! What are the shifts like and what does it pay?

  1. My friend works at a movie theater and they pay $7.50 and only give him 25 hours a week. The shifts are like 5 hours long. His movie theater pays a little more than most, I think, because it is nicer.

  2. Typical pay to start is Minimum Wage (depends upon your location).  Typical hours are weekends for temp help (usually Friday night, anytime Saturday and/or Sunday).  Weekdays and evenings are usually filled with permanent employees, while weekends are usually for highschoolers and college kids).

  3. I've worked at 3 different movie theaters in years past.

One was an usher (AMC Theaters), one was a Projectionist/Usher (O'Neil Theaters), and one was a Customer Service/Cashier/Food Service/Usher all-in-one.

The hours are basically just like Retail - they want you available from open to close on all days, just to know that you're available. Even if they don't actually have a time for you to work on some days, they want your complete time open for them. Most start off part-time.

AMC Theaters started me off at $5.15 an hour back in 1999. I think minimum wage is like $5.85 an hour in Georgia...it varies by your state. For expensive places to live...some minimum wage can be $8 or $10 an hour. I worked hours ranging from 10am in the morning until as late as 12:30 and 1a.m. in the morning. Part-time shifts are usually 6 hours, though sometimes you get 8. Sometimes my hours were 6pm to 1a.m. for this usher position with AMC...they sucked. Sweeping condoms and all kinds of filth off from the floor. It's disgusting. A janitor pays more, and that's basically what it is.

I started off at $5.25 as a Projectionist (my brother was a manager and got me on there) with O'Neil Theaters back around 2000. That job was really about $10/hr. worth of work...but I was in high school for this job and the above job, so any money was helpful and part-time didn't matter to me. I worked 12pm to 12:30a.m. shifts on Saturdays and Sundays, and usually 6pm to 12a.m. after school on a few weekdays.

I worked at an independent movie theater that started off at $5.75 an hour. Customer Service/Cashier/Concessions/Usher. That was about $12 an hour worth of work, and I only stayed for about 10 months.

Funnily enough, I started at an Office Depot store at $8 bucks an hour with just 10 months of Cashier experience from the movie theater. Movie theaters aren't that great and pay as little as they can. Try something retail...you'll make a little more and it won't be as annoying and disgusting. You'll usually only get 15 to 30 hours max...more like 20 or 25 for most weeks.

  4. i think you should apply first, it's not a surething when you're looking for a job. and then ask the employees
