  1. contact the one of the judges in the local family court, and ask if he/she might refer you to one of the local social workers.  You could volunteer to work with the social worker for a period of time.  The social workers and the police actually are the front line of law enforcement in that area.  On the private side, check out soup kitchens, the Salvos and St. Vinies, and local churches.  Good luck!

  2. Outreach for nonprofit organizations is called "marketing" or "public relations." It entails writing press releases, talking with the press, networking with other nonprofit organizations, organizing outreach campaigns, scheduling people from the organization to talk to different groups, creating press events, organizing online activities, maintaining online activities, coordinating mass mailings, etc.

If you are interested in this kind of career, pursue an undergrad degree in journalism or public relations, and look for a nonprofit certificate program that will give you a background in nonprofit management. You should consider minoring or double majoring in another language, such as Spanish.

You will also want to volunteer with nonprofit organizations to learn about how they engage in outreach activities.
