  1. Work visas in India are known as "E" visas.

An Indian corporate sponsor is required in order for an applicant to file an "E" work visa application the Indian Consulate having jurisdiction over the applicant's place of legal residence. Once the "E" visa is issued, most Indian Consulates can take jurisdiction to summarily issue an "E" visa without further referral to the Indian migrations authorities for final approval. However, Indian Consulates always reserve the right to refer an application to the Indian migrations authorities for final approval.

Indian immigration law has not codified any specific requirements to obtain an "E" work visa. However, as with any visa application, a consular officer or migrations officer will consider an applicant's academic and professional qualifications to fulfill the proposed position in India. Please be advised that a consular or migrations officer can exercise wide discretion in adjudicating whether an applicant possesses the requisite qualifications and whether an Indian national can perform the same job.

"E" work visas are typically issued initially for one year and can be renewed in one-year increments. Some jurisdictions in India only permit a maximum of 4 renewals (5 years). The number of and determination of renewals are adjudicated on a regional basis.

Documentation requirements and processing times for employment authorization are often not uniform and are subject to change at any time. Please contact your nearest Indian embassy/consulate for the most up-to-date information. Also check with them whether any separate work visa is required for persons who already have a multiple entry visa.

  2. u will need to contact the FRO office (foreign resident office) and they hve a website but it is pretty useless.  most people catch hold of agents there who get it done for a fee - that is the best option.  the employee will have to show up every year to get it renewed (with his family if they have also a family visa attached)
