Question:

Working abroad as a Speech Language Pathologist - Which Country?

I am interested in working abroad after my CFY. I would really like to go somewhere in Central or South America to become more proficient in Spanish. I would want to work there for a year and then return back to NC. Has anyone done something similiar? What would the salaries be in Central or South America? Would I be able to earn a significant amount and the cost of living be low? I just don't want to do it if it's going to cause me to go more into debt. Can anyone give me any advice or suggestions? Thanks in advance!!!

  1. how about SmileTrain?

They are a charity that provide medical and therapy services for children in third world countries with cleft palate.

I dont really know if they pay though. I do know for a fact that SLPs go over with them to provide speech therapy. you could contact them and see if they hire.

but if you are looking for something less harsh...

  2. It is very difficult to get a work permit in a foreign country...including low...a fraction of what they are in the states.  Even professionals make about 1/10th of the salary in the U.S.  You must find an employer first and he must sponsor your work visa.  If there are professional organizations of speech pathologists that could help you with international possibilities, that might be a way.  This would probably be difficult at an entry level in the profession.
