I am about to finish my Bachelor's In Criminal Justice here in MN. I have always been interested in NYC and am looking into the possibility of applying with the NYPD. If hypothetically I got offered a job there, can anyone help me understand the cost of living, quality of life, where to live, etc. NYC is so mind boggling to an outsider, I would appreciate ANY advice anyone could give about topics ranging from the NYPD to costs to quality of life etc.

(P.S. NYPD start at 36K and are at about 65K after 5 years.)

P.S.S. What boroughs are suitable? Manhatten is too pricey, but what about the other 4?

  1. Well if you think the city is too pricey then deffinately dont go to Suffolk or Nassau. I live out there and its alot more expensive then the city.  IDK about the other boroughs though NYPD is a good job I have known a few people in the NYPD.

  2. The salary for NYPD decresed. it's starts at 32K for the academy period and only after 6 months will get 36K. Depends how much you want to spend. In general , 1 bedroom apartment ranges between 1200-1500$/month, in a good area. You can't actually consider where u'll leave until u don't finish teh academy and see where u'll work. Anyway, after 6 months ( probation period) u'll be transfered again, so...and ur average beging salary, after taxes and no spouse will be around 1800+ overtime...so, will be touch in the beginin, but also there r a lot of benefits....
