I have a tentative offer from the FAA to work at DFW center as a Air Traffic Control Specialist. I am wondering what life will be like working there. I am fresh out of the military. I have plenty of experience so I am not wanting to get into all that hooplah. I just want to know what it is like working there if anyone knows. Can I get some details?

  1. I'll start by saying:  You're making a huge mistake if you think your military experience will compare or translate to the center.  It's two completely different things.

I remember when I was in the military.  We always thought the center folks were just sitting there doing nothing, making the big bucks.  Now that I'm a center controller, I look back at just how easy approach control was.  And frankly, center folks are underpaid for what we do or can do.

Now, ZFW is one of the easier level 12's around.  Currently they have staffing problems.  And they have management problems as well (I think they all do).  Nevertheless, level 12 is what it is.  Very busy, complex and will take years off your life.  Having said that, once you figure it out, you will have a huge sense of pride that you got checked out and work at the 5th busiest air traffic facility in the country.

But some valuable advice.  I wouldn't tell anyone about your experience (or lack thereof).  Just tell them you were in the military and know a little bit about the .65 and can't wait to learn more.

    Good luck

  2. I have a friend who works DFW center and he's loving it.  As a controller, I can tell you your chances of finding a DFW mushroom here in the next three days is slim.  I know for a fact there are several on the ATC chat board at http://www.stuckmic.com

Welcome to civilian life.  It's a lot different out here.  You'll like it.
