  1. Sorry Paige 123, while this is the truth for you, it is not the truth for everybody.  If you want to do what you call "try this out" I say do it.  I started as a bus driver  for the Boys & Girls club and I couldn't get enough of it after a small bit of experiences. Ive been involved for 20 years now and if I wouldn't have taken that posting off my city college job board then it would have never happened. You can be an aide or CT (counselor in training) by passing a background check and with the college experience you have.  Without actual child dev. classes or ece classes/training you wont be able to teach.  I recommend you talk to some parents that know of what they consider to be a "quality school and go there to apply.  Without proper training, you might see some centers with very little programming schemes and be indoctrinated into what is not a true sound model in ece.  I propose you try to find a better learning venue. In lieu of pay,you will not make much more than minimum wage but, as you said, it will be such an incredible experience preparing you for Kindergarten.  You will actually be ahead of many Kindergarten teachers haven had real, practical experience with development leading up to this period.  I encourage it.  In many cities you can actually substitute in elementary school with at least 80 hours in general studies.  You should try to find a mentor to observe so that sound practices are modeled to you.  Go to NAEYC then type in your zip.  You will find the local chapter and a contact will be a phone call away.  I vote yes......"try it you might like it...."

  2. If you are studying a childcare course then you should be able to get a support job eg assistant which would normally be minimum wage for your age.

If you want to be higher up in ranks then you will need level 3 qualification and to be incharge you should be atleast training for level 4-in future I think they want everyone leader to be degree level!

    Youre job will probably be:

-set up toys and activities, tidy up end of day.

    -Play and monitor the children

-Maybe toiletting depends if you get criminal record  checked

-Sit with them for lunch and snacks to keep them safe

Its agreat job and I love it but there is A LOT of paperwork and I mean a lot! You have achievement records for each child, the planning for next steps, curriculum plans for setting as whole, meetings with other professionals, special education needs paperwork...theres a lot of training and on going training hroughout career-but it is rewarding as you see the children grow and learn and you know you played a huge part in that!

  3. Do not do it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The hours are VERY long and  you earn nothing. Not only that but you are seen as just a glorified babysitter.  Work in the public schools as an aide. Day cares work  you until you are tired. In day cares they will always put you in a different class( the worst class) so it will never be consistent especially if you are part time.

  4. I would imagine one of the first things they will ask in an interview is are you CPR certified and have you taken a basic 1st aid class.

  5. I'm in California (high cost of living) and as a "Teacher" because I had a specific # of credits I only got $9.25/hr.  With no experience you would probably get minimum wage.

As an assistant you would change diapers or take kids potty, depending on their level.  You would probably serve meals, help supervise them outside and while doing circle time/art projects, help them fall asleep during nap time, and probably a lot of cleaning.

I think the laws would depend on your state but you would not need a degree to be an assistant and you would need a minimum number of credits to be a teacher and a degree or certificate to be a head teacher.

  6. I am currently a kindergarten teacher and I worked the summer before my first year of teaching and I feel like it was the best training you could get.  There is no curriculum, but you will learn a LOT about behavior management. In 2005 I was paid $8/hr as an assistant teacher.  Good luck.
