I applied for a job as a server at Commander's Palace, and I was wondering what I should expect if I was to get the job. It's fine dining, and I don't have any experience waiting tables (so I would be a back waiter), and I was hoping you guys could fill me in on the details, like pay, atmosphere, etc.

  1. Great money and you are lucky to land a great job.  You will not make much at first, but you will later with hard work and if you listen to the elders there you will learn very much.  do some homework on wine knowledge and the foods that accompany them. You can experiment at wine tasting events.  if you do this taste different foods and please spit the wine out because you do not want to get intoxicated.  You are using your taste buds to encourage patrons to buy an excellent wine with their meal. This is very important as a class waiter to display your self confidence with wine.  Watch the waiter you work with carefully and listen to him /her without question.  You are in training and be an eager student.  As a back waiter you both need each other because the objective is the customer to have a fine dining experience.  this is not a diner nor steakhouse.  be silent and learn.  Observe the balance in tipping,  Do not speak much, but do as you are told and you will be an excellent waiter.  I forgot as a back waiter, do not speak to patrons unless told to.  Don't be afraid to ask questions about service to the waiter you work with after or before the shift.  If they are in a rush just do what they say.  Like in Kung Fu you have much to learn grasshopper.  Hope this helps

  2. I would love to work in the restaurant business, and I did apply for resturant jobs when I was job searching.  I did apply to work for this one restaurant that was opening; and I was told by managment that if I wanted to apply for a waitress job; I had to be a waiter assistant (if I had no waiter experience).  I'm pretty sure they will tell you the same exact thing.

In my personal opinion; I don't think all restaurants treat their job applicants with respect.  But goodluck.
