  1. If you don't like hard work stay away from golf course maintenance,go work in the golf shop

  2. man up and do the work.  forget about your xbox and double whoppers with cheese and break a sweat. if your any good they will probably let you golf for free, and that should make anyone happy.

  3. To get to know all aspects of golf, this will give you an edge on the other guys that never called the golf course their office.

Give it a go for a while and see how it sits with you.

You will be a regular in front of the Golf Pro shop and will have inside information once a position there opens up.

    Good luck mate.

  4. If you want to work in a golf shop, not on the grounds crew, don't settle. look around and talk to head pro's. at a private club you can get into the bag room, or even on as a players assistant (Ranger.) public you can get inside the shop, or at the range. the reason I differentiate is most private courses higher girls for the shop for eye appeal. working in the bag room or as a Players Assistant is a qualifying job to become a PGA Apprentice Professional as (Outside operations.) Trust me from experience, the Grounds Crew life is not glamorous and is extremely tiresome. Best of luck to you in all your endevors

  5. I've done both, and depending on what you prefer - working outdoors all day w/o dealing w/ customers but doing some good hard labor, or working indoors talking to customers about golf all day - they're both pretty rewarding jobs.

They don't pay well unless you eventually work your way up to head pro or superintendent, but you're on a golf course - enjoy it.

Depending on what your boss wants you to do, you could spend half the morning sitting on a mower mowing greens, collars & aprons (approaches & fringe), tee boxes, fairways, rough, etc.

Usually one guy does greens, one does tee boxes, collars, & aprons, one does fairways, and one does the rough.

After the mowing is done for the day, someone is assigned to rake traps (sometimes this person gets stuck on trap duty while everyone else mows in the morning).  If you're stuck raking traps by hand, that job can really suck especially after a hard rain.  If you get the motorized sand pro, you've got an easy job on your hands.

Weedeating can be pretty tough if you're stuck doing it for a few hours at a time.

Any on course projects are worked on in the afternoon after all the regular daily duties have been completed.

But if you can't find anything in a golf shop, work on the grounds crew at a course that has a decent # of shop employees, especially high school & college kids.  They generally don't stay more than a couple years, and that means that there are new job openings every year.

Also, if you work for one year on the grounds crew, maybe play in a golf league and get to know some of the regulars, that will certainly help your chances of working in the shop in the years to come.  The pro will know you're a hard worker if you made it thru one year on the grounds crew.  Not that it's tough or anything, but most head pros just teach, sell merchandise, golf, and play in section tournaments every Monday.  They've got it a bit easier than you, and if they see that you're willing to pay your dues, they may really want you in their shop in the future.  Remember, customer service is #1 for golf shop employees, as well as all other employees on staff.  So get to know as many golfers as you can, make some friends, and you'll be fine.
