Working at hostels for room and board?

I'm in the process of planning a year-long backpacking trip through Europe. My mother informed me that many european hostels will allow you to do extra work there in exchange for room and board. Is this true?

It is a couple of years since I was last at any European hostels but yes your mother is correct , at some of the hostels I stayed at they did have signs up mentioning that possibility. It would of cause depend on the time of year and whether they needed someone just when you were there. So you could not depend on finding work for board , it is all a matter of good luck.
