One of my working colleagues, is a heavy daily drinker and just lately I have noticed that he perspires a lot from his brow and emanates a rather offencive odour from his hair and skin, even though I know him to be extremely hygienic and impeccably dressed etc. Can this strange smelling odour be directly linked to his alcohol consumption or can there be other reasons, such as a low blood sugar? It is a sensitive subject, but I am becoming concerned for him really apart from finding this odour almost nauseating as it is a heavy sweetish smell which takes ages to leave the room. I need information before broaching the subject in a sensitive manner and suggesting he sees a doctor before it gets worse.

Thank you in advance if anyone with a medical opinion can help.

  1. Yes, directly related tot he booze

  2. Yes the alcohol is though out his entire system and he can sweat it out through his skin and his breath (lungs) you can smell a person who is drnking or has been drinking. breather lizer breathing test that the police give

  3. is his belly distended, like a 'beer belly' or like he is pregnant?  Does he seem to have belly pain?  have you ever thought he looked vaguely yellow, especially in the whites of his eyes?  If you say yes to some of these questions, he could have liver disease, either from the drinking or other things.  Liver disease causes odd body odor. If he has any of the symptoms I noted, you could perhaps mention them instead of the fact that he smells funny and see if he can see a doctor based on that rather than being a stinker.
