I am a Civil Engineer from India with a 3 years Diploma in Civil Engineering. I am planning to move to Dubai to work there. Can any one tell me what the normal working hours are in the Construction Industry. What are the rules regarding Overtime and Weekly offs, Medical Leaves, Casual Leaves and Earned Leaves etc. Are the Indian Engineers treated with respect there?

  1. All are treated in respect.Secondly, it is mainly depend on the opportunity that you get. However, as i Diploma - holding engineer, you might get around Dhs 10 000 a month which is about $3000.Overtime rate is Dhs 50/ hour after working hours which is 8 a day.

  2. This will be purely depends on the company in which you are joining. As per the federal labour law the working hours will be 8 hours per day and 6 days in a week. In construction industry the working hours will be variable depends on the organization. You can see the Indian Construction Giants (all over the world) Dodsal, Punj Lloyd etc here too.

Normally in Construction Industry the duty hours will be 10 hours and 6 days a week, friday will be weekly off. In some companies the duty hours will be 12 hours per day (6-60. In summer there will be mid day off in work.

Overtime, Working hours, weekly off etc will be depending on the contract (between you and company) you are going to be signed, and the official contract with the Ministry of Labour will be different one (it will show that 8 hours per day and 6 days week).

Normally 30 days annual leave will be provided in each 12 months completed of it will be calculated as 2 days per month and actual national holidays. There will be medical leaves but no casual leaves, or other types of paid leaves.

Obviously, Indian Engineers treated with respect in Construction Industry (not only Indian, but all engineers are treated with respect).

    Best of Luck
