I'm going to be working in Bethesda, MD and hear the horror stories of Washington-area traffic. Where's a good place to live that balances commute time (ideally < 45 minutes), affordable housing, and decent accomodation (i.e. not living in a dump somewhere).

 1. The good news is Bethesda is on Metro's Red Line - the bad news is that is the most crowded Metro line. I used to live on Capitol Hill and commute to Bethesda via the Red Line at Union Station, but not during rush hour. You can use Metro's trip planner (link below) to see how long it would take including walking from any address in the DC area to your work in Bethesda via Metro or bus. I would recommend Capitol Hill (you can walk everywhere you need to go) and you should be able to find something "affordable," but that is a relative term in DC. You are going to enjoy lunches in Bethesda as it has 200+ restaurants!
